how to measure effectiveness for 'key messages'

the biggest conundrum for communications professionals is how to measure the effectiveness of your key messages in all platforms.

a quick and dirty list would include:

traditional media/blogs: penetration of those key messages/talking points (did they accruately describe your points?)
social media: engagement of ‘fans’ using activity and sentiment (are the fans reacting? how do they feel about your messages?)
enewsletter: actionable requests based on key messages (did the recipients send an email to their legislator? did they make a donation?

compile these 3 measurements into a monthly report and you’ll be on your way to understanding if your messages and effective. if they aren’t, change them.

my journey to APR is complete

it has been a long process that was interrupted by my youngest child (what an awesome surprise) and it culminated last week.

so here is my story. let me begin by stating that you can develop a plan of study but the best plan of study involves actually “doing the work”.

so how did i “do the work”?

i began my APR process in Spring 2011 by attending a kickstart event in Charlotte.

at that point, i’d ambitiously set my goal for the readiness review to take place by fall of 2011. but that summer, i found out that i was pregnant. surprise!

so until then, i figured that i’d immerse myself in RPIE (research, planning, implementation, evaluation) at work. i decided that i’d learn by doing. any communication plan that i could write, i did.

teaching four years of public speaking, intro to communication, and interpersonal communication at a local community college helped me “study” history, concepts, and theories.

the path to APR

my son was born in feb 2012 and during my maternity leave i decided to review the APR study guide in depth. i also created a syllabus for study. (since i am a teacher, i thought “what a great way to study”.)

my syllabus included:

chapter readings - Effective Public Relations 10th edition
social media tools (blogging, tweeting, pin boards, etc)
online study course (for group study)
audiobooks (of myself) reciting the APR study guide to listen to
commissioned a graphic artist to create 2 one pager infographics to help prep (readiness review, CBE)

applying for APR

in sept 2012, i filed my application and in early oct 2012, i received notification of acceptance into the process. oddly enough, i chose to sequester myself at a hotel for a weekend to bang out my readiness review the same day that i found out that i was good to go! now the pressure to perform is on.

i completed my readiness review on a complete communication plan from a program at work - an internal subject matter expert database. i chose not to include an ‘array’ of work from several plans, but to include a singular one, where i was able to demonstrate the KSAs.

i quickly alerted my local chapter readiness review board to let them know that i was ready to schedule my review. seeing as i’d been studying and preparing for 16+ months, i felt that i was ready. (unbeknownst to me, my chapter review board members were experiencing lots of professional growth and accomplishment so that pushed my readiness review back until after the holidays.)

in dec 2012, i put the finishing touches on my readiness review presentation deck and in jan 2013, i completed my readiness review and in march 2013, i completed my computer based examination.

what to expect at the readiness review

be comfortable, yet be powerful
think 50% job interview, 50% big presentation
just because APRs are leading it, they don’t know everything about PR. you can teach them something new and or give them a new strategy/tool/tactic to employ
remember, you have a shared vocabulary (the KSAs) but we all bring something unique to the table
*shine*

what to expect from the computer based examination

3:45 minutes is a long time and short time all in one sitting
your mind will wander because you’ve been reading voluminous text
you may begin to wish the test was ‘over already’ so you get just get your score
you will begin to wonder “why didn’t i study that more?”
after you submit your test, the screen will go blank and those are the longest 30 seconds of your life. i felt my heart beating in my chest waiting for the results.
finally, if you’ve lived the APR exam, you will pass, if you went at it half-heartedly or you aren’t humble, you will fail - it’s a simple as that

when i saw that i’d passed the first thing i did was send a tweet…seriously. then i called my husband. crazy, i know. but i’d made this process so public that i felt that i should share my results publicly as soon as possible.

APR in a nutshell

my process took almost 2 years from the moment i decided to take the APR until the moment i obtained it
i studied in the way that worked for me, you should do that same
i took the opportunity to learn while doing, it’s the best way to study
i never feel bad for saying “well, the textbook said…”. trust me, that is how you know the information has sunk in
get support from those closest to you, you need their help and encouragement
